Saving Homes With Yayasan Chow Kit
The current Full / Enhanced Movement Control Order (FMCO / EMCO) implemented nationwide has accelerated the need to support the under-privileged. While children are not largely affected by Covid-19 illness or death, they do suffer from disruptive consequences of the pandemic such as home eviction, physical and psychological morbidity and regressing in learning abilities.
For those who are not familiar with Yayasan Chow Kit, they are a non-profit organization that has been providing meals, activities, therapy, case management and educational programmes for at-risk children and teenagers around Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur.
In light with the on-going pandemic, they had widened their scope to providing food aids to 150 families (located within KL and Selangor) and fundraising for children medical emergencies on ad-hoc basis. In recent months, the organization highlighted the growing number of homeless families who were kicked out to the streets due to outstanding rental amount. Yayasan Chow Kit made a collective decision to help families who are struggling to pay rent for at least a month to reduce their burden and the risk of being kicked out on the streets.
Currently, they have about 50 families under their wing and each granted up to RM600/month rental aid. However, the reception for this initiative is not as positive as their food aid. Therefore, the CSR Committee had pledged RM3,000 to support their continuous effort in helping the less fortunate communities in KL.
